First Spring Tournament

After all of the practicing, lifting and conditioning our team has done so far this spring, we finally got to play in our first spring tournament this past weekend at Loyola (Md.). In our pool we were paired with Loyola, American University and Howard University. Heading into the gym on Saturday morning, we were all pumped up and ready to get on the court. With all of the setbacks and injuries we’ve endured this spring season, we really wanted to come out and show everyone how hard we have been training.

Our first match of the day was against Loyola and since we have played them a few times recently, we knew some tendencies of their team going into the game. However, we came out very flat and dug ourselves a hole quickly getting down 10-2. We couldn’t get going and eventually dropped the first set 25-17. During the second set, we once again fell behind early, but this time rallied with more energy and competitiveness than we did in the first set, but once again we fell 25-16.

After having two games off, we played American. We played more aggressive and started passing the ball better and swinging at the ball harder. We got some really good blocks, and played really good defense against a potent offensive team but couldn’t pull out the first set and lost 25-21. We came out with the same lineup in the second set and played harder than the first set because we knew we could stay with this team and even pull out a win. We made a few errors down the stretch, however, and unfortunately lost this set too, 25-22.

Our last match of the day was against Howard and we were hoping for a win to end the day. Even though we were tired from the American game we just played, we played some of our best volleyball of the day and swept Howard in two games. We won the first game 25-16 and the second game 25-18.

Our next spring tournament will be this coming weekend here in our home gym and we hope to improve our play and get some better results. We are already back in the gym this morning training hard and we hope to get a little bit better this week so we can compete at our highest level.
