Retrievers Out-and-About: Several Swimmers Take Part in Regional/National Meets

Several members of the UMBC swimming and diving teams took part in big meets the past couple of weekends, including junior Abbey McKenney, who swam at the 2010 ConocoPhillips National Championships in Irvine, Calif.

McKenney swam the 100-meter freestyle and set a lifetime-best time of 59.66 in 118th place. She set the UMBC record and won gold in the 100-yard freestyle at the 2010 America East Championships.

Junior John Mendenhall and sophomore Anna Plunkett took part in the 2010 Speedo Champions Series in Buffalo, N.Y.

Mendenhall took home bronze in the 200-meter breaststroke in a time of 2:26.21, while he finished 10th in the 100 breast in a time of 1:08.04.

Plunkett 28th in the 200-meter butterfly in 2:28.43, 62nd in the 100 fly in a season-best 1:07.62 and 69th in the 200-meter individual medley of 2:35.90.

Two weekends ago, Alex Moothart and Katie Powlen competed at the 2010 New England Open Long Course Championships.

Moothart won the 200-meter butterfly in a time of 2:10.18, seventh in the 200-meter freestyle in 2:01.67, 11th in the 100 fly in 59.49 and 13th in the 1,500 free in a time of 17:18.47.

Powlen finished 14th in the 1,500-meter freestyle in a time of 18.32.33, 19th in the 800 free in 9:47.08 and 37th in the 400 free in 4:44.98.

The Retrievers open the 2010-11 season October 8 against Bucknell.
