Weekly Award Blog – 3/10/10 – Track and Field All-Academic Team Announced

Throughout the 2009-10 school year, the UMBC Dawg Blog will keep track of all of UMBC’s accolades. This week, the Retrievers won multiple awards in five different sports.

Mwali Phiri – Tennis

America East Men’s Tennis Performer of the Week (week ending Feb. 28)

The Retriever newcomer posted a 5-1 record over the weekend , including a 4-0 mark in conference play in singles and doubles. He recorded a 6-0, 6-0 win over Hartford’s Edgardo Ureta at No. 5 singles and won a key match at U. Conn, capturing a tie-breaker in a 6-4, 4-6, (10-6) victory over Dave Adams at the No. 5 slot. Against Boston University, he again prevailed in a three-set breaker, edging James Bernstein, 6-4, 2-6, (10-6).

Heather BrownSoftball

America East Rookie of the Week

Brown picked up a pair of wins in as many appearances to help lead the Retrievers to the UMBC Retriever Classic title last weekend, posting a 1.56 ERA and striking out 11 against just three walks in nine innings of work. She allowed just one unearned run on three hits and struck out a career-high seven batters against Morgan State on Saturday, then fanned four in five innings while allowing two runs against Brown on Sunday. She also helped her own caused against the Bears, belting a solo home run for her first career hit.

Malorie Weller – Softball

Weller batted .417 (5-for-12) with three doubles, four RBI and four runs scored, leading UMBC to the tournament title with a perfect 4-0 record.

Carlee Cassidy – Women’s Basketball

America East All-Academic Team

Cassidy becomes the first Retriever ever to earn all-conference honors three times during UMBC’s seven years in the America East, as she was tabbed to the first team in 2008 and the second team in 2009.

Cassidy leads the Retrievers with 13.1 points per game this season, and she has posted career bests with 134 rebounds (4.6 rpg) and 62 assists. Her 68 three-pointers are tied for the sixth-best single-season total in UMBC history, giving her three of the top 10 spots on the list.

Cassidy also excels in the classroom, boasting a 3.35 grade-point average as a sociology/new media and communications double major. She also earned All-Academic team honors as a sophomore in 2008.

Chauncey Gilliam – Men’s Basketball

America East All-Conference Third Team

Gilliam led the Retrievers in scoring, averaging 13.5 points per game. He was even more proficient in America East Conference play, scoring at a 15.3 points per game clip (sixth in America East), and most proficient in road league games with a 17.6 scoring average. The wing guard also led UMBC in three-point field goals (42), free throws (89) and free throw percentage (80.9%, fourth in America East) and steals (42, 1.5 per game, fifth in America East).

Adrian Satchell – Men’s Basketball

America East All-Rookie Team

Satchell became UMBC’s second-ever selection to the all-rookie team, joining Jay Greene (2005-06) as the only Retrievers to earn that distinction. He was the lone freshman in the league to start each of his team’s games and was the leading freshman rebounder in America East with 4.8 per game. Satchell averaged 6.0 points per game and was sixth in league games in field goal percentage at 49.0%.
