Retriever Alumni Update – Feb. 4, 2010

Another good week for former Retrievers in the professional leagues as we look at six former student-athletes in three different sports.

Professional Basketball

In Denmark, former Retriever Darryl Proctor scored 11 points and grabbed five rebounds in the Bakken Bears’ 86-68 victory over Horsens IC on the 24th of January, and added 16 points and three steals in a 78-71 win over the Hørsholm 79ers. For the season, Proctor is averaging 17.6 points per game and 2.3 steals, second in the league.

A correction from a couple of updates ago, former Retriever Jay Greene did not suit up for the Vermont Frostheaves, he was injured in practice and will miss the entire season.

Professional Soccer

Two former Dawgs, Guiliano Celenza and Billy Nelson, played for the Baltimore Blast in their home-and-home with Milwaukee. Celenza scored two, two-point goals in the Blast’s 13-10 loss on Jan. 23, while he added a goal in Baltimore’s 10-6 win last Saturday.

Professional Lacrosse

In the National Lacrosse League, former UMBC star Drew Westervelt has scored five points in each of his last two games, scoring two goals and three assists in Philadelphia’s 12-11 loss in overtime to Colorado on Jan. 23. Last Saturday, he picked up a goal and four assists in the Wings’ 11-9 loss to Boston. For the season, he has 8 goals and 10 assists in four games played.

Jon Harasym picked up a shot on goal in Buffalo’s 11-7 win over Minnesota on Saturday. Harasym has played in all four Bandits’ games this year, scoring two goals.

As always, if you know of any former Retrievers playing in professional or semi-professional leagues around the world, please email tfenster@umbc.edu and we’ll start tracking them. Thanks for reading.
