Weekly Awards Blog – January 12, 2009 – Even More Soccer Year-End Awards

Throughout the 2009-10 school year, the UMBC Dawg Blog will keep track of all of UMBC’s accolades. This week, the awards blog returns from hiatus over the winter holidays with all of the awards won by the Retrievers over the past month.

Adrian Arthur – Track and Field

America East Male Track Performer of the Week (Dec. 6, 2009)

Arthur finished third in the 60-meter dash at the Bison Opener to begin his senior season with the Retrievers. His time of 6.89 qualified him for the IC4A Championships in March. Arthur’s time was .01 seconds off of his time in the 60m at last year’s Bison Opener.

Victor Gilreath – Track and Field

America East Male Field Performer of the Week (Dec. 6, 2009)

Last year’s America East high jump champion and the school record holder in the triple jump, Gilreath won the Bison Opener high jump with an IC4A-qualifying mark of 2.04m. He also placed second in the triple jump with a leap of 14.38m, which qualifies him for the IC4A Championships.

Amanda Deller – Track and Field

America East Female Field Performer of the Week (Dec. 6, 2009)

Deller claimed first in the shot put in her UMBC debut on Saturday. To take the title, Dellar threw an ECAC-qualifying distance of 13.68m. Her throw bests the mark of last year’s America East shot put champion by .02m.

Brian Neller – Men’s Basketball

America East Rookie of the Week (Dec. 27)

Neller becomes UMBC’s second honoree of the season, as teammate Shawn Grant (San Jose, Calif./St. Francis) earned the award on Dec. 7.

Neller hit three of six shots from behind the arc and scored nine points in the Retrievers’ 71-34 setback at Virginia Tech on Dec. 22. He leads the Retrievers with 17 three-point field goals on the season and is averaging 5.6 points per game.

Andrew Bulls – Men’s Soccer

NSCAA All-Northeast Region First Team

2009 College Soccer News All-America Third Team

Bulls is UMBC’s first player to receive First Team honors since Andy Wells did so as a senior in 2001. He scored 15 goals and added 11 assists in his second collegiate season.

Levi Houapeu, Chris Williams – Men’s Soccer

NSCAA All-Northeast Region Second Team

Houapeu scored 15 goals and added 13 assists, while Williams solidified a young UMBC defense.
