Swimming and Diving Holiday Training – Tuesday, Dec. 29th

The UMBC men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams travel to Florida annually for a week of training. The Dawg Blog has travelled down south this year with the team to provide some insight (and to drive one of the 15-passenger vans).

UMBC takes the pool at 6 a.m.

After a long day of travel and practice that started with the buses leaving UMBC at 6:15 a.m. and ended with a fairly light practice from 4-6 p.m. down at St. Andrew’s, a private school in Boca Raton, Fla., the Retrievers started Tuesday the 29th with their regular morning practice for this trip at 6 a.m.

Jason Mattingly takes fans to the gun show.

Sophomore Jason Mattingly said it was quite cold outside (I’m paraphrasing for the children) as practice began with an outside temperature of 47 degrees. Inside the pool, the temp was a balmy 81 degrees and coaches Chad Cradock and Chris Gibeau kept the student-athletes busy with a long-course meter practice until the sun started to show itself towards the end of practice at 8 a.m. The view of the sunrise from the deck was breathtaking to say the least.

Sunrise at St. Andrews

After some time at the beach (or in their rooms taking a nap), it was back to St. Andrews for a short-course yards session from 2:15-4:15 p.m. Another tough practice ensued, and with the temp hovering around 70 degrees, senior Matt Mattingly, Jason’s older brother, said “this morning was freezing and now we’re sweating.” By 4:15, sunburns were settling in and we were over a quarter of the way done with this trip. Here’s some pictures from the afternoon session, we’ll be back tomorrow with some more pics.
