Weekly Award Blog – Dec. 8, 2009 – Retrievers Rack Up Multiple National and Regional Awards

Throughout the 2009-10 school year, the UMBC Dawg Blog will keep track of all of UMBC’s accolades. This week, a bevy of awards as the ECAC gave out its men’s soccer awards, while Inside Lacrosse announced its preseason awards.

Levi Houapeu – Men’s Soccer

2009 ECAC Division I Offensive Player of the Year

ECAC First Team All-Star

Goal.com Team of the Year – Second Team

Houapeu earned the nation’s largest athletic conference’s top honor after accumulating 43 points during the 2009 season. The America East Midfielder of the Year tallied 15 goals, 13 assists and three game-winning goals for the Retrievers this season while leading UMBC to a 14-6 record.

Andrew Bulls – Men’s Soccer

ECAC First Team All-Star

Goal.com Team of the Year – Second Team

Bulls amassed 41 points this season, netting 15 goals, eight of which were game-winners, and adding 11 assists. He also earned America East Striker of the Year honors.

Kyle Wimer – Men’s Lacrosse

Inside Lacrosse Preseason All-America First Team

IL Preseason America East All-Conference Team

Wimer earned All American and America East First-Team honors in 2008 after an All-Rookie team citation in 2006. The two-way midfielder recorded personal season bests of 24 goals and 18 assists in 2009 and has 98 points (53 goals, 45 assists) after his first three seasons of play.

Bobby Atwell – Men’s Lacrosse

Inside Lacrosse Preseason All-America Third Team

IL Preseason America East All-Conference Team

Atwell earned All-Championship team honors in 2008 and America East Second Team accolades in 2007. He has competed in 46 games, with 32 starts in three seasons and amassed 86 ground balls and a pair of goals.

Jordan Pierce – Men’s Lacrosse

IL Preseason America East All-Conference Team

Pierce played in all 16 games for the Retrievers scoring three goals and adding three assists.

Shawn Grant – Men’s Basketball

America East Rookie of the Week

Grant tallied a team season-high 28 points on 10-of-14 shooting in 26 minutes at Towson on Dec. 2. The 28 points tied for the fourth-most points in a game by a UMBC Division I freshman and is the most since Brian Hodges scored 28 vs. UNH on March 4, 2005 in an America East Tournament game. Grant scored 19 second-half points, leading UMBC’s rally, which fell five points short in an 82-77 setback. Grant added 12 points at Toledo on Dec. 5 and now has now scored in double figures in five of his last six games.

Grant is the first Retriever to earn a weekly conference award in the 2009-10 season and the first since Chauncey Gilliam won his fourth and final Rookie of the Week award on Feb. 23, 2009.
