Weekly Awards Blog – Nov. 18, 2009 – Soccer All-Championship, XC All-Academic Awards

Throughout the 2009-10 school year, the UMBC Dawg Blog will keep track of all of UMBC’s accolades. This week, a bevy of awards for many Retriever teams including two All-Academic selections.

Michelle Kurowski – Women’s Basketball

America East Player of the Week

Kurowski averaged 21.5 points, 10.5 rebounds and 4.5 assists in two games last week, shooting 56 percent from the field, 50 percent from three-point range and a perfect 11-for-11 from the free throw line. She was named America East Player of the Game for both contests.

She scored a game-high 21 points and added seven rebounds againstVirginia, leading the Retrievers in a tight game against the nation’s 14th-ranked team on Friday night at the RAC. She tallied half of UMBC’s 34 points in the first half as the Retrievers and Cavaliers were tied at intermission.

Kurowski then posted her second career double-double in UMBC’s 102-65 victory over in-state rival UMES on Sunday, recording a game-high 22 points to go along with career highs in rebounds (14) and assists (7) to finish just three helpers shy of a triple-double. Seven of her 14 rebounds were on the offensive glass, and she also drained a career-best four three-pointers in the game.

Sara Parkinson – Cross Country

America East All-Academic

Parkinson earned All-Conference honors at the 2009 America East Cross Country Championships on Oct. 31, when she led the Retrievers across the line and finished sixth overall. An excellent student, the senior has a 3.62 cumulative GPA and is majoring in geography and environmental systems.

Andrew Bulls, Levi Houapeu, John Paul Waraska – Men’s Soccer

America East All-Championship Team

The UMBC men’s soccer team made it to the 2009 America East Championship game, but fell 2-0 at Stony Brook. In the tournament, Houapeu scored a goal and added an assist, Bulls had the assist on the game-winner against UNH and Waraska was solid in defense.

John Paul Waraska – Men’s Soccer

America East All-Academic Team

Waraksa has started all 18 games he has participated in this season and has played the third-most minutes of all field players with 1,516. For his career, the history major has played in 53 games, started 37 and has scored three goals and added five assists. He is majoring in history and has a cumulative GPA of 3.37.

Matt Mattingly – Swimming and Diving

America East Male Swimmer of the Week

Mattingly helped lead the Retrievers to wins over Maryland and Towson on Saturday, winning the 100 breast (57.73), 200 breast (2:07.95) and 200 IM (1:52.71) along with the 200 medley relay. His times in all three individual events were UMBC season-best times and it was only the second time he had competed in the 200 breast in his four-year career.
