Retriever Alumni Update – August 27, 2009

Another big week for Retriever alumni as we’ll look at the Major League Lacrosse Championship Weekend, the IAAF Championships in Berlin and more!

Major League Lacrosse

Former men’s lax stars Brendan Mundorf and Drew Westervelt propelled their Denver Outlaws squad to an appearance in the MLL Championship game, but fell to the Toronto Nationals 10-9. Mundorf scored a hat-trick and two assists and Westervelt added four shots in the title game.

In the semifinals, Denver defeated Boston 11-10, Mundorf scored three goals while Westervelt added an assist.

On Aug. 20, Mundorf was named to the All-MLL team as an attacker. He led the Outlaws in goals and for the third consecutive season scored 40 points. For his career, he has 122 goals and 42 assists.

12th IAAF World Championships in Athletics

Cleopatra Borel-Brown, a former Retriever track and field star, placed 13th in the women’s shot put with a throw of 17.99m (59’0.26”). She finished seventh in Group B, one place outside of qualifying for the final.

Minor League Baseball

Former UMBC ace Zack Clark has taken his move to Frederick by storm as he has struck out five without giving up an earned run in six innings of work. This past week he appeared in two games for the Keys, striking out two in two innings at Myrtle Beach on Sunday before striking out the side in the ninth in a 3-2 loss last night.

United Soccer League – Division I

Matt Watson played all 90 minutes in a 0-0 tie for the Carolina RailHawks against the Rochester Rhinos on Saturday. He followed that up, playing the second half and picking up an assist in a 9-0 win over Miami FC.

On the season, Watson has appeared in 14 matches and has earned a goal and an assist.

As always, if you know of any former Retrievers playing in professional or semi-professional leagues around the world, please email tfenster@umbc.edu and we’ll start tracking them. Thanks for reading, hope your summer is going well.
