Retriever Alumni Update – August 6, 2009

As the summer winds down, we’ll be getting back to on a more weekly routine. This week a former basketball player wins Puerto Rico’s highest league championship and a former lax star makes his debut in Major League Lacrosse and what a debut it was!

Baloncesto Superior Nacional

Ray Barbosa and Vaqueros de Bayamon have won the Baloncesto Superior Nacional after defeating Quebradillas 4-2 in the finals. Barbosa saw action in three games in the series, which saw Bayamon close out at home on Monday night, 84-82. For more information on Bayamon’s title win, please click here (translated from Spanish).

Major League Lacrosse

Saturday night saw the debut of Peet Poillon in the professional ranks and he started off with a bang. Poillon scored the first goal of the night for the Washington Bayhawks against the Chicago Machine just 50 seconds in. He finished with a hat-trick in the first half and concluded the game with four goals in a 17-16 Bayhawks overtime victory. For his efforts, the former Dawg star was named MLL Rookie of the Week. Terry Kimener also played in that game and scored two goals himself, giving him eight on the season.

Brendan Mundorf and Drew Westervelt led the Denver Outlaws to a 13-9 win over Long Island as Mundorf netted a hat-trick and an assist, while Westervelt added two goals and an a assist. The duo are the top point-scorers for the Outlaws, as Mundorf has 42 points and Westervelt is just two behind.

The final weekend of the regular season starts tonight as Washington takes on Boston at 7:30 p.m.. Washington needs to defeat Boston and Chicago to defeat Long Island (Sat. at 7 p.m.) to make it to the championship weekend, held Aug. 22-23 at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, Md. Denver has already advanced to the championship weekend and faces Toronto Sat. at 7 p.m. as well.

Eastern League – AA Minor League Baseball

Former UMBC ace Zack Clark saw action in two games this past week, earning the win for Bowie on Saturday night against New Britain. He pitched four innings, allowed two runs and struck out two on the way to a 7-4 Baysox win. Last night, Clark threw 1 2/3 innings and allowed 2 runs as the Baysox lost 6-0 to New Hampshire. On the season, Clark is 1-1 with a 6.11 ERA in 17 2/3 innings pitched.

Central American and Caribbean Championships – July 3-7

Former UMBC track and field star and Olympian Cleopatra Borel-Brown recently competed for Trinidad & Tobago in the shot put at the Central American and Caribbean Track and Field Championships and took home the bronze medal with a throw of 17.98m (58 ‘ 11.87 “). I know it’s a little late, but still bears mentioning. Congrats to Cleopatra!

As always, if you know of any former Retrievers playing in professional or semi-professional leagues around the world, please email and we’ll start tracking them. Thanks for reading, hope your summer is going well.
