Retriever Alumni Update – July 30, 2009

This week on the Retriever Alumni Update, two former lacrosse players played in the Major League Lacrosse All-Star Game, a former basketball star is in the Finals in Puerto Rico and former baseball ace makes his return to the mound from off-season injuries.

Baloncesto Superior Nacional

Ray Barbosa and Vaqueros de Bayamon have advanced to the finals of the Baloncesto Superior Nacional against the Quebradillas. The Quebradillas lead the series 2-1 after winning Game 3 92-89 last night. Barbosa saw his only action of the series so far in last night’s game, playing two minutes and adding an assist. Game 4 is Friday night, while Game 5 is Saturday night.

Major League Lacrosse

Two former UMBC lacrosse players competed in the 2009 MLL All-Star Game on July 16th. Brendan Mundorf had three goals, an assist and the only penalty of the game for the “Old School” team, while Drew Westervelt added a goal for the “Young Guns” squad. Mundorf’s “Old School” team prevailed 22-21 in overtime.

Both players play for the Denver Outlaws, who have clinched their fourth consecutive playoff berth and lead the MLL with an 8-2 record. Mundorf leads the team with 38 points and 30 goals, while Westervelt is second in points with 37 and leads the Outlaws with 14 assists.

Terry Kimener scored a goal and an assist for the Chicago Machine as they defeated the Washington Bayhawks 18-11 on Saturday, July 25. Kimener now has 11 points with six goals in nine games played this season for Chicago.

Rookie Peet Poillon was claimed off of waivers on July 22 by the Bayhawks, but has yet to see action this season.

United Soccer League – Division II

Former UMBC men’s soccer player Brian Rowland earned a shutout in his last game for Crystal Palace USA FC  as they tied the Charlotte Eagles at zero last Saturday at UMBC Stadium. Rowland has now earned six shutouts on the season. He also played in net as CP USA fell to the Richmond Kickers 2-1 on July 18. Former Dawg Kevin Gnatiko started the game and recorded a shot. CP USA sits in a tie for fifth place with 22 points with two games to go in the season.

Eastern League – AA Minor League Baseball

Former UMBC ace Zack Clark has returned to action after an injury that nagged him much of the first half of the season. Clark has been assigned by the Baltimore Orioles to the Bowie Baysox, who are 57-47, 4th place in the Southern Division of the Eastern League. Clark has seen action in seven games, has a 0-1 record with three strikeouts in 12 innings pitched. Clark last saw action on Tuesday, the 28th, when he pitched two scoreless innings, but the Baysox fell 13-12 in 11 innings.
