Men’s Lacrosse Japan Trip #1 – Welcome from Alex Hopmann

The UMBC men’s lacrosse team is in Japan for the 20th annual International Friendship Games as part of an 11-day journey to Tokyo and Nagoya, Japan. Some of the members of the squad will be sharing their experiences here at the Dawg Blog. Our first entry is from Alex Hopmann.

Hello All,

I am happy to report that the freshmen are still freshmen. The sophomores are now juniors, the juniors now seniors and the seniors now retired. These poor freshmen have one last hoorah of carrying the balls and equipment before the fall semester finally arrives. This morning started with us leaving from lot 17 in some good old-fashioned yellow school buses provided by the Annapolis Bus Company. The trip all started today with Tim Eagan and the horrible breakfast that all of us had to smell this early morning and Godzilla (Kevin Goedeke) getting searched in security. All of us are wearing white Under Armour polos and have been questioned multiple times about what UMBC actually stands for. I am sad to report that Matt Latham might not know the exact meaning.

So now to the flight:

The trip of our lives started today with a one-hour delay. To our benefit the airline provided us with a 15 dollar coupon to use at any restaurant of our choice. I don’t think the Potbelly’s by gate B40 has ever had to make so many subs and milkshakes in approximately one hour. Right now I am writing this blog during approximately hour six of our 13-14 hour flight. We’ve had to endure six hours of crying babies. Poor Benin Bembry chose to switch seats to get an aisle and had to deal with the little baby girl kicking and punching the back of his seat. Coach Zim is on the other side but I’m sure he was able to ignore it because of all the stuff we put him through.

The in-flight map shows us flying over the Gulf of Alaska. The in-flight selection of movies has been pretty good. Most guys have watched Gran Torino, which stars the all- time great Clint Eastwood himself. While most of us have watched that, I know ALL of us have seen He’s Just Not That Into You. A very girly chick flick that Mike Burch himself recommended.

Great job! I guess there is a payback system, everyone on the team putting up with Bembry’s stuff this season, and him getting the annoying kid on the flight! I didn’t know my kids went to Japan last week!
