America East Softball Championships – Live Updates – Friday, May 8

Welcome back to Stony Brook University for the second day of the America East Softball Championships. The fourth-seeded Retrievers will take on the third-seeded Albany Great Danes in the first elimination game of the double-elimination tournament. The winner will take on No. 1 Stony Brook Saturday at 12 p.m., while the loser is eliminated. Earlier today, No. 2 Boston University defeated Albany, 4-3, in eight innings, then took down the Seawolves, 6-1, to advance to the championship game. For up-to-the-minute stats, follow along with GameTracker.

UPDATE: Second baseman Lauren Brummell beats out an infield hit up the middle to lead off the game. Marissa Powell is pitching for the Great Danes after America East Pitcher of the Year Leah McIntosh went the distance in the first game of the day.

UPDATE: After first baseman Amanda Fefel struck out, right fielder Emily Thompson gave the ball a ride, but left fielder Nicole Kothe tracked it down in front of the fence for the second out.

UPDATE: Left fielder Malorie Weller strikes out to end the inning.

UPDATE: Stephanie Weigman retired shortstop Andrianna Walraven on a pop-up to second, but Kothe hit a bloop single that was just fair inside the left field line. Third baseman Megan Butsch, the America East Player of the Year is at the plate with one on and one out.

UPDATE: Butsch strikes out swinging for the second out to bring up All-Conference Second Team first baseman Gina Mason, who homered against Boston U.

UPDATE: Mason hit a line shot to left field, but Weller tracked it down at the wall to end the inning. Page, O’Malley and Culotta are due up for the Retrievers in the second.

UPDATE: The Retrievers go down in order in the second. Connors, Bill and Smith are due up for Albany.

UPDATE: After getting the first two batters on a fly ball to right and a strikeout, Weigman walks All-Conference Second Team catcher Kat Smith to bring up designated player Bailey Van Deest, who singles to left. Right fielder Jessica Bergin is up with two on and two out.

UPDATE: Bergin grounds to third base to end the inning. Kearns, Vetock and Brummell are due up for the Retrievers.

UPDATE: Third baseman Krista Kearns leads off the third with a single through the left side. Amanda Barker is pinch running with shortstop Jessica Vetock at the plate.

UPDATE: Vetock was down 0-2 but works a walk and Brummell singles down the left field line to drive in Barker. Retrievers lead, 1-0. Fefel’s up with two on and none out.

UPDATE: Fefel grounds to second but the runners move up with one out for Thompson. A very productive out.

UPDATE: In a 13-pitch at-bat, Thompson’s hit dies in front of the plate and she’s thrown out at first. Runners hold at second and third for Weller.

UPDATE: Weller grounds to the pitcher to strand the runners and end the inning. Top of the order coming up for Albany.

UPDATE: Butsch, who was 0-for-5 on the day, hits a two-out solo homer over the left field fence to tie the game at 1-1. Mason follows with a single to center to bring up Connors.

UPDATE: Connors singles to right to put runners on first and second with two outs for Kristine Bill.

UPDATE: Bill’s liner looked like it was going to fall in, but Vetock made a nice diving catch to end the inning and preserve the tie. Page, O’Malley and Culotta are due up for the Retrievers in the fourth.

UPDATE: Powell retires the Retrievers in order. Bottom of the order is due up for Albany.

UPDATE: Pronobis tracks down Smith’s long fly ball at the left field wall.

UPDATE: With Walraven’s walk, the Great Danes have runners on first and second with two outs for Kothe.

UPDATE: Kothe’s liner looked destined for center field, but second baseman Lauren Brummell smothered it and flipped to Vetock from her stomach to just get Walraven at second and end the inning. Kearns, Vetock and Brummell are due up in the fifth.

UPDATE: The Retrievers go down in order for the second straight inning. The Great Danes have the heart of their order coming up, with Butsch leading off.

UPDATE: Butsch leads off with a line double to center, which brings Coach Joe French to the mound.

UPDATE: Weigman was ahead 1-2 on Mason, but she beans the first baseman in the back of the shoulder to put two on for Connors with no outs.

UPDATE: A passed ball puts runners on second and third. Connors grounds to short, and Vetock throws home too late to get Butsch. The Great Danes take a 2-1 lead, and there are still no outs with runners on first and second for Bill.

UPDATE: Bill lines a hit to load the bases for Kat Smith. Still no outs.

UPDATE: Big strikeout for Weigman, her fourth of the game. Bases still loaded, now one out for Van Deest.

UPDATE: Van Deest grounds to shortstop and Vetock comes home. Page appeared to have the plate blocked, but Mason’s slide knocked her off balance and the ball dribbled out of her glove and rolled away while she lay on the ground, apparently injured. Connors came home on the play to make it 4-1 Albany. Walraven grounded out to end the inning, but the damage was done. Fefel leads off for the Retrievers.

UPDATE: Fefel flied out to start the inning, and Emily Thompson hit a slow grounder to shortstop. The throw from Walraven was high and pulled Mason off the bag, and Thompson beat it with a feet-first slide. Weller followed with a single to right to put runners on first and second with one out for Page, who stayed in the game after the bang-bang play at the plate last inning.

UPDATE: Page’s hit looked like it was going to fall in for a bloop, but Walraven made a nice over-the-shoulder catch, then fired to second to try to catch pinch runner Ashley Carver, but she threw it away and Carver advanced to third anyway. O’Malley is up with runners on first and third and two outs.

UPDATE: O’Malley gave it a ride, but Kothe caught it in front of the center field wall to end the inning.

UPDATE: Fefel is now pitching for the Retrievers. Kothe will lead off for Albany.

UPDATE: Fefel gets Kothe looking, but Butsch doubles and advances to third on a passed ball. Mason pops up to second for the second out.

UPDATE: Connors triples down the right field line and tries to score when Weller’s throw goes over Kearns’ head at third, but Carver guns her down at the plate. The Retrievers are down 5-1 heading into the seventh, so they need some runs if they don’t want to go home.

UPDATE: Culotta grounds to second for the first out. Kearns is up with Alison Duff on deck to pinch hit for Vetock.

UPDATE: Kearns hits a deep fly to left that Kothe catches at the wall. Duff is the Retrievers’ last hope.

UPDATE: Duff pops to Walraven at short to end the game.

UPDATE: Weigman will finish an outstanding season at 22-16, and the Retrievers’ season ends at 34-21.
