Debut of Retriever Alumni Update

This is the first weekly update on former Retrievers in the professional ranks. This week four former Dawgs helped lead the Baltimore Blast to the NISL Championship and four alumni saw action in National League Lacrosse.

National Indoor Soccer League

P.J. Wakefield, Matt Watson, Billy Nelson, Giuliano Celenza – Baltimore Blast

Both Wakefield and Watson scored in Baltimore’s 13-10 win over the Rockford Rampage in the NISL Championship Game on April 11. Wakefield (right) gave the Blast the lead in the first quarter with a three-point goal and, after a Rampage goal, Watson scored to give the Blast a 5-4 lead, an advantage they would not relinquish.

All four former Retrievers made significant contributions this season. Wakefield scored 12 goals on the season with 21 blocked shots on his way to being named Second Team All-NISL. Celenza was second on the team with 45 points, with 19 goals (third in NISL) and seven assists. Nelson helped anchor the defense with 25 blocked shots, while Watson posted 11 goals.

Congrats to these former Dawgs and the whole Blast team. For more information on the Blast, please visit their official site here.

United Soccer League First Division

Matt Watson – Carolina RailHawks

Watson was not done for the week as he scored a goal for the RailHawks in a 2-1 friendly victory over the Wilmington Hammerheads, just hours after witnessing the birth of his first child in Baltimore. The former Retriever’s next game with the RailHawks is Saturday when Carolina faces off with the Rochester Rhinos. We at the UDB would like to congratulate Matt on becoming a father and wish him and his family all the best.

The RailHawks will have three games broadcast live on Fox Soccer Channel beginning with an away match at the Cleveland City Stars on Friday, May 22. For

National League Lacrosse

Drew Westervelt, Jon Harasym – Philadelphia Wings

Westervelt scored four goals, including the game-winner, and was named the game MVP in Philly’s 16-14 win over Toronto on April 11. Harasym scored the game-tying goal with five and a half minutes to go, as the Wings face Rochester Saturday with the winner securing the final playoff spot in the East Division of NLL.

The former Retriever Westervelt is second on the team with 34 goals and fourth in points with 53 while Harasym has 10 points, including three goals, in seven games with the Wings after joining them mid-season.

Westervelt is certainly making a case for All-NLL this year. For more information on the Wings, please visit their official site here.

Brendan Mundorf – New York Titans

Mundorf had an outstanding game with two goals and two assists in the Titans’ 12-9 win over the Buffalo Bandits to move one game of the Bandits for first place in the East Division with one game remaining in the season. The UMBC alum has had a great year with 56 points on 25 goals and 31 assists.

New York concludes its regular season at Minnesota on Saturday, April 18. For more information on the Titans, please visit their official site here.

Dan Marohl – Minnesota Swarm

Marohl had five points including two goals in as the Swarm dropped a 19-14 decision to the Portland LumberJax. The former Dawg has 18 goals with 25 assists on the season.

Minnesota finishes its season Saturday at home against New York at 8 p.m. For more info on the Swarm, please visit their official site here.
